Power of the Tongue

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: 

it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, 

and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. 

Isaiah 55:11

The word of God has divine power because it is the Words of the true and living God. But 

our own words are also powerful, especially when we speak God's Word. We can 

overcome Satan through God's words:

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.   Revelation 12:11

Ö  Confession by our mouth is part of salvation:

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be 

saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth 

confession is made unto salvation.   Romans 10:8-10

Ö  Because our tongue is a powerful instrument: 

Using it for the good and the furtherance of God's word should be our first priority.  Know 

that our tongue has the power to bring spiritual death or life as we minister to others:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.   Proverbs 18:21

Ö  We can also snare ourself with your own words: 

We can get our self into difficulties by what we say:

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth; thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.  Proverbs 6:2

Ö  Our words can prevent us from acknowledging the power of God:

Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?   Psalms 12:4

Ö  Satan uses the things we say to cause a breach in our spirit. 

A breach is an opening through which he can enter:

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.  Proverbs 15:4

Ö  What we say affects our soul:

A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.  Proverbs 18:7

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.  Proverbs 21:23

Ö  Our words affect our whole body:

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.  James 3:6

Ö  Our words affect our whole life:

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.   Proverbs 13:3

Because the Word of God is so powerful, believers have a responsibility to make it known 

to the world. The early Church assumed this responsibility for the Word of God. They went everywhere preaching it:

Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.  

Acts 8:4 

And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. Acts 13:49 

They asked God for boldness to speak His Word.   The Word of God increased throughout 

the world because of their faithfulness 

And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.  Acts 6:7

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.   Acts 19:20

The Holy Bible is the written Word of the one true and living God. There is special power in these words of God:

For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, 

piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, 

and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.   Hebrews 4:12

We will never receive the fullness of God's power until we experience the power of His 

Word.

Because the Word of God is so powerful, we are obligated to share the truth of it; not water-downed, sugar-coated versions, but the pure and undiluted word of God.  

Believers have a responsibility to make it known to the world; not just within the confines 

of the church and family members. The early Church assumed this responsibility for the 

Word of God.   The disciples went everywhere preaching it.  They asked God for boldness to speak His Word: 

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word . . .

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; 

and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.   Acts 4:29,31 

In actuality, this is a case of God's word coming to fruition.  Jesus had already told the disciples that they were to witness to the world and they would need power from on high to 

do so:  

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  Acts 1:8

The Word of God increased throughout the world because of their faithfulness. 

God confirms His Word with signs following. One cannot wait for the signs to precede the Word. You have a responsibility for spreading this powerful Word to the world. 

v      God puts His Word in you so you can speak it to others:

I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My 

words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.   And it shall 

be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it 

of him.  Deuteronomy 18:18-19

And I have put My words in your mouth; I have covered you with the shadow of My hand, That I may plant the heavens, Lay the foundations of the earth, And say to Zion, 'You are 

My people.'  Isaiah 51:16   (Also refer to:  Jeremiah 1:9; 3:12; 5:14; 26:12; 

Ezekiel 2:7-8)

v     If we are taught in God's Word, then we have a responsibility to teach others:

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. 2 Timothy 4:2

v      We are to preach the Word throughout the world: 

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:47

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  Mark 16:15

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.  2 Timothy 4:2

v      We are not to speak our own words, but His words: 

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own 

words:  Isaiah 58:13

v      We are not to be ashamed of the Word: 

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of 

his Father with the holy angels.  Mark 8:38

v      We are to teach it to your children: 

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy 

gates.   Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Believers prevent the flow of God's power in their lives through their own words. They speak coveteous, idol, and foolish words. They argue over commandments of men that turn people from the truth of the Gospel. They speak evil words about others, murmur, complain, boast, and lie. They speak words that cause division, words of cursing and bitterness.  Then they wonder why they are powerless.

Remember: 

The flow of God's power in our life is not only affected by the power of 

HIS Word, it is affected by the power of OUR words.
