Are Your Prayers Legitimate Prayers?




Hitherto have ye asked nothing IN MY NAME;
ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16:24


"Hitherto" means "up until now." Up until the time Jesus spoke these words, His followers had asked nothing in His name. At this point He established a new relation with them. He told them to ask God for things in His name:  . . . 

Verily, verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father IN MY NAME, He will give it you.   John 16:23

What a powerful promise! Whatever we ask In His name, we will receive!

But this promise has to be taken along with the other principles of prayer taught in the Bible. We can never isolate one verse on a subject without considering all that is taught on that subject in the Word of God. The Bible teaches 

You cannot ask selfishly.  

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.  James 4:3

You must also be living righteously before God. 

If you sin, you are to confess and pray for forgiveness:  

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a RIGHTEOUS man availeth much.         James 5:16

You cannot continue to live in sin -

and think just because you ask in the name of Jesus you will be granted your requests. It is the prayers of righteous men and women that avail with God:  

If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.   John 15:7

This means IF you are abiding in Christ you can ask and it shall be done. IF you are walking in obedience to God's Word, then you can ask in the name of Jesus.

Praying in the name of Jesus is also subject to God’s will. Jesus prayed:  

Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.   Luke 22:42

In the weakness of human flesh, Jesus did not want to suffer. He wanted the cup of suffering removed, but He submitted His will to God's will.

In some matters clearly defined in Scripture, we know the will of God and exactly how to pray. In other matters we can express our will, as did Jesus, then submit our will to His will -- all in the name of Jesus.

Requests made in the name of Jesus are subject to the sovereign will of God. We ask according to human reasoning and cannot always discern God's higher purposes:  

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.   For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.   Isaiah 55:8-9

You will not always know the will of God and exactly how to pray. When you are not sure of the will of God, it is a good time to pray in the language of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf according to the will of God:  

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: FOR WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE SHOULD PRAY FOR AS WE OUGHT; but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.   Romans 8:26-27

Some will disagree with this Biblical teaching. They will say you can ask ANYTHING in the name of Jesus and it will be done. When you arrogantly pray without submitting your requests to God’s will, He may answer your requests, but it may not be in your best interests. He did this for the nation of Israel:  

And He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.     Psalms 106:15

You must also realize that when you ask for something on behalf of another person that their will enters into the situation. Nobody, through prayer in the name of Jesus, can push something on someone else which that person does not want. God does not take away the free will of man. Another person's will and unbelief can affect your prayer for them.

John relays a great prayer Jesus prayed (John 17) concerning the men God gave Him as disciples. All these men received the same training. They saw the same miracles. They received the same Word of God. But yet one of them was lost. Judas still had a will of his own, and despite all he had heard and seen, rejected God's Word in unbelief.

Jesus spoke of the power of agreeing with others in prayer in His name:  

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done of them of my Father which is in Heaven. For where two or three are gathered IN MY NAME, there am I in the midst of them.   Matthew 18:19-20

As part of prayer, thanks should be given in the name of Jesus:  

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father IN THE NAME of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Ephesians 5:20

You should also give thanks to the name of Jesus:  

By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks TO HIS NAME.     Hebrews 13:15

Spiritual Gifts Glorify God





Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
(1 Corinthians 12:1)



Jesus left His followers with the responsibility to extend the Gospel message to the ends of the earth. The power of the Holy Spirit would help them fulfill this task:

  
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues  They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.  (Mark 16:15-20)

Jesus did not leave His followers with such a great responsibility without giving us the ability to fulfill the challenge. Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to empower believers to be effective witnesses of the Gospel.

The subject of spiritual gifts was one on which Apostle Paul taught in the early church. He said:

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. (1 Corinthians 12:1)

The word "spiritual" means "characterized or controlled by the Holy Spirit". A "gift" is something freely given from one person to another. A spiritual gift is a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to a believer to minister as part of the Body of Christ.

There is a difference between the "gift" of the Holy Spirit and "gifts" of the Holy Spirit. The birthing of the "gift" of the Holy Spirit occurred on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) when the Holy Spirit came in answer to the promise of Jesus:

 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: . . .  Acts 1:8

And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter...Even the Spirit of truth...  (John 14:16-17a)

The "gift" of the Holy Spirit has already been given in answer to this promise.

"Gifts" of the Holy Spirit are supernatural abilities the Holy Spirit gives believers to enable effective ministry:

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.   (1 Corinthians 14:12)

Because every believer has at least one spiritual gift, we each have a responsibility to discover and use our gift.

You will not be judged by how many spiritual gifts you have. You will be judged by your faithfulness to use the spiritual gift or gifts you have been given. The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 confirms this truth.

There are many spiritual gifts, but no believer has all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit:

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?  Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? (1 Corinthians 12:29-30)

A person may have more than one gift, but no one has all the gifts of the Spirit. If he did, then he would have no need of others in the Body of Christ.

A spiritual gift from God can be abused. To "abuse" a gift means to not use it properly. You can abuse spiritual gifts by:

Ö     Not using gifts given to you:

Apostle Paul told Timothy:

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. (1 Timothy 4:14)

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. (2 Timothy 1:6)

Ö     Attempting to use gifts not given to you:

While ministering in Samaria, Peter and John met a man named Simon who wanted to have the powerful gifts he saw demonstrated. Simon offered money to obtain these abilities. Peter said:

Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter... (Acts 8:20-21)

Spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit. They cannot be obtained by any other method. You cannot just decide you want to have or use a certain spiritual gift. The Holy Spirit must give it to you.

On another occasion, seven sons of the chief of the priests saw the miracles of the Apostle Paul and tried to use this gift to cast out evil spirits:

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them and overcame them, and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. (Acts 19:15-16)

It can be dangerous to try to operate a gift without the Holy Spirit's anointing.

Ö     Not using the gifts properly:

In 1 Corinthians 12-14 Paul deals with proper use of spiritual gifts. To summarize, he states:

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace...Let all things be done decently and in order.  (1 Corinthians 14:33,40)

God is not the author of confusion. Where there is confusion the gifts are not being used correctly. Spiritual gifts can also be improperly used when you manipulate people, gain wealth, or use them for your own selfish satisfaction rather than in ministry to others.

The guidelines for use of gifts which Apostle Paul gives in I Corinthians 12-14 prevent confusion.

Ö     Glorifying your gift:

When you "glorify" your gift, you consider it more special than other gifts. You begin to see the gift as greater than the Giver.

Regardless of which gift we may have, one is not to be esteemed above the other; each one glorifies God in it's own unique way.

The Works of the Flesh - Part 6 (Murder, Drunkenness, Revellings)





Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God. 
(Galatians 5:19-21)

Review

We wrestle every day against the sinful influences of this world.  They bombard us everyday in every way.  Our sinful flesh or self nature does not have the capacity in and of itself to combat these influences thus our spirit has to fight against the works of the flesh.  The works of the flesh are sinful qualities which contrast the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John 2:16

The works of the flesh are characteristics of the sinful nature of man caused by iniquity and lust [sinful desire]. They are opposites of the qualities which the Holy Spirit wants to develop in your life.

There is a constant spiritual battle going on in the life of a believer. The works of the flesh are trying to destroy the fruit of the Holy Spirit:

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (Galatians 5:17)

The fleshly desires of natural man are contrary to the nature of the Holy Spirit.  

Although the results of these sins are visible in wrong actions, the cause is not visible. The cause is sinful desires [lusts] of the heart:

And He saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him...

And He said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; And these evil things come from within, and defile the man.  (Mark 7:18, 20-23)

The sins listed in Galatians 5:19-21 are not all of the sins identified in the Bible. They are a group of sins called "works of the flesh" which contrast the fruit of the Spirit.  Today we are continuing with:

MURDER

To murder is to take the life of another with willful malice and forethought. 

Murder is not the same as self-defense or an accidental killing. Murder is not the same as imposing the death penalty on a person who has killed someone. This was a judgment established by God in Numbers 35. One of the first commandments given by God was "Thou shalt not kill".

Jesus said:

He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, (Matthew 19:18)

You should not be guilty of murder:

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. (1 Peter 4:15)

The New Testament expands the meaning of murder to include hatred. If you hate other believers it is like being a murderer:

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. (1 John 3:15)

DRUNKENNESS

Drunkenness is a condition of having mental and physical faculties affected by excessive drinking.  It is intoxication caused by strong chemical drinks. 

The Bible warns that the drunkard will be poor:

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. (Proverbs 23:21)

You are not to live a drunken lifestyle:

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. (Romans 13:13)

You are not even to keep company with those who are drunkards:

But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one go not to eat.   (1 Corinthians 5:11)

The Bible warns that drunkards will not inherit the Kingdom of God:

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

You may have been a drunkard in times past, but as a believer you are no longer to do this:

That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:  (1 Peter 4:2-3)

The Bible contrasts being drunk with wine and being filled with the Spirit:

 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)

In the natural world, a drunkard...

            1.         Is consumed with desire for drink.
            2.         Yields control of his emotional, and physical faculties to drink.
            3.         Has his speech affected by the drink.
            4.         Is free from inhibitions; has no fear and often has great strength.
            5.         Is joyful or unduly mean while under the influence of intoxicants.

REVELLINGS

Revelling is to engage and delight in worldly pleasures, participating in worldly, boisterous merry making or festivity. It is riotous and wild living.

You may have been a reveller in times past, but as a believer you are no longer to behave this way:

That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.  For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:  (1 Peter 4:2-3)

THE RESULT  OF INDULGING WORKS OF THE FLESH:

Apostle Paul explains the results of doing the works of the flesh:

. . . of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  (Galatians 5:21)

God has given a way to avoid this penalty:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

WALK IN THE SPIRIT:

How does one stop doing the sinful works of the flesh?

>     Repent of your sin and have faith towards God through accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.  (2 Corinthians 5:17)

God does not take sinful man and give him a self-improvement course. He creates a new creature. The old things pass away. The works of the flesh are to be replaced by the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

>     Be filled with the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who will enable you to walk in the ways of the Lord instead of the sinful ways of the flesh:

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:17)

>     Realize you cannot be freed from the works of the flesh and walk in the Spirit through your own effort.

Apostle Paul described the struggle he had in his own effort to live a Godly life:

For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.  (Romans 7:15-19)

Apostle Paul experienced the difficulty of living a holy life but he continued to pursue this goal despite his failures.

Ask God to put a desire to be holy in your heart. Whenever you fail and sin, confess it immediately and ask the Holy Spirit to help you overcome it. This is how you learn to walk in the Spirit and...

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. (Romans 8:1-9)

The fruit of Christ-like qualities only develop as you walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is why it is so vitally important for believers to understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

The Works of the Flesh - Part 2: Uncleanness and Lasciviousness






Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, 
variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, 
drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you before, 
as I have also told you in time past, that 
they which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.
(Galatians 5:19-21)





Through the word of God we know that the works of the flesh are sinful qualities which contrast the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
  
The works of the flesh are characteristics of the sinful nature of man caused by not only our sinful desires but fueled by the iniquity within us, Satan and the world. They are opposites of the qualities which the Holy Spirit wants to develop in your life in order to be in the image of Christ.

There is a constant spiritual battle going on in the life of a believer. The works of the flesh are trying to destroy the fruit of the Holy Spirit:

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.  (Galatians 5:17)

The fleshly desires of natural man are contrary to the nature of the Holy Spirit.  The works of the flesh are:

Apostle Paul lets us know that it is a daily thing that we war against the ungodly characteristics and desires of our flesh.

But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 
1 Corinthians 9:27

> UNCLEANNESS

Uncleanness is the opposite of being clean. In this passage on the works of the flesh, the word "uncleanness" means being spiritually or morally unclean.

God does not want His people to be unclean:

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints. (Ephesians 5:2)

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.  (1 Thessalonians 4:7)

It is our responsibility to mortify uncleanness and discipline our self to live a holy life; a lifestyle pleasing to God:

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.  (Colossians 3:5)

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  (1 Corinthians 7:1)

That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour (1 Thessalonians 4:4)

If you do not mortify uncleanness then you will yield to it:

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh; for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
(Romans 6:19)

If you continue to yield to uncleanness you will eventually give yourself over to it:

Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ.  (Ephesians 4:19-20)

If you continue to live in spiritual uncleanness [sin], God will give you over to it:

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (Romans 1:24)

When a man is given over by God to something, his conscience ceases to function and he is totally controlled by it. He will perish in his sin unless he repents:

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness...

these as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption...
           (2 Peter 2:10, 12)

Look at what happens when you connect the dots on the verses regarding uncleanness; a pattern emerges. You have the power within you to either mortify or yield to sin. If you mortify uncleanness, it will lead to holiness in your life. If you yield to it, you will eventually give yourself over to it. Finally, God will give you over to it and you will perish in your own corruption:

If YOU mortify uncleanness:  

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

(Colossians 3:5), 

it leads to holiness:  

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.  (1 Thessalonians 4:7)      

On the other hand, if YOU yield to uncleanness, it leads to: 

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.  (Romans 6:19) 

which results in: 

Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. (Ephesians 4:19) 

If GOD gives you over to it: 

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (Romans 1:24) 

which ends in utterly perishing in our own corruption:  

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness...


these as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption...              (2 Peter 2:10, 12)

> LASCIVIOUSNESS

Lasciviousness is the sin of lust, sinful emotions, and lewdness. It is filthy and shameless conduct.

Lasciviousness is one of the characteristics by which you can see this ungodly behavior:

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 4)

In times past you may have been lascivious. As a believer, you are no longer to continue this behavior:

That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:   (1 Peter 4:2-3)

The Bible teaches that if you continue to be lascivious, you will eventually give yourself over to it without conscience:


Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work uncleanness with greediness. (Ephesians 4:19)

God desires that we live in and display His image.  And, it is a command of God that we live holy and clean lives characteristic of the fruit of the spirit - allowing our lights to shine so that others will come out of the darkness and into God's marvelous light.


Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  (Matthew 5:16)
