Watch Your Mouth

For in many things we offend all.  If any man offend not in word, the same is a
perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
James 3:2

The Holy Scriptures have divine power in that they are the Words of the true and living God. However, our own words are also powerful, especially when you speak God's Word.  How many times have we caught our self biting our tongue when we longed to say something that we knew we shouldn’t?   The word of God tells us that we are to follow peace with all men:

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:  Hebrews 12:14

It is our words more often than not that causes contention, dissension, animosity and disharmony, etc. even more so than our actions.

As believers of God, our words should be seasoned with grace and kindness particularly in potentially un-peaceable situations.  This doesn’t mean that we are to be pushovers or doormats.  If we allow God to rule our thoughts and our hearts and His Holy Spirit to bridle our mouth, we won’t have words of regret, anger, lies, etc. slipping out.  Instead we will have words given to us by God.  The Holy Spirit will lead us in who to say it, what to say it, where to say it,  when to say it, how to say it, and not only that and, most importantly; when to simply walk away.

We can overcome Satan through words:

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.  Revelation 12:11

We have to be so very careful because our tongue has the power to bring spiritual death or life as we minister to others.  In leading the lost and even in our encouragement to others, we should not allow words of condescension or animosity to win or encourage others.  Instead of helping them, we very well may have killed them spiritually.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Proverbs 18:21)

Have you ever wanted to snatch back something you said in haste?  We can snare our self with our own words. We can get our self into difficulties by what we say:

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth; thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Proverbs 6:2

Our words can prevent us from acknowledging the power of God:

Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? Psalms 12:4

Satan uses the things we say to cause a breach in our spirit. A breach is an opening through which he can enter:

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. Proverbs 15:4

What we say affects our soul:

A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.  Proverbs 18:7

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.  Proverbs 21:23

Our words affect our whole body:

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (James 3:6)

Our words affect our whole life:

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.  Proverbs 13:3

It is indeed a sad state that believers prevent the flow of God's power in their lives through their own words. They speak covetous, idol, and foolish words. They argue over commandments of men that turn people from the truth of the Gospel. They speak evil words about others, murmur, complain, boast, and lie. They speak words that cause division, words of cursing and bitterness.  Then they wonder why they are powerless.

Our mouth, though capable of much damage also has the power with God and the help of the Holy Spirit to do good not only to others but to our self.  Confession by our mouth is part of salvation:

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:8-10)

It is so very important that we remember at all times that
the flow of God's power in our life is not only affected
by the power of HIS Word,
it is affected by the power of OUR words.
