Holistic Healing: Emotional

For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.
  Jeremiah 30:17

When the body is not holistically healed, it is crippled.  There are 5 major areas that need to work in tangent in order that we may live an unleashed life in Christ Jesus – a life that is not bound by physical illness, emotional hurt, mental turbulence, financial insecurity, and spiritual instability.  I believe our life has to be unleashed or unfettered from the yoke of illness in whatever form it presents itself in order to fully serve God.  If you’ve ever been in a situation where your focus was more on your situation; be it physical, mental, emotional or financial strait, you know that it has an impact on you spiritually.  So from that standpoint, lets take a look at these 5 areas and see what the word of God has to say about them.  First, let’s define what it means to heal:
√     to make healthy, whole, or sound; restore to health; free from ailment.
√     to bring to an end or conclusion, as conflicts between people or groups, usually
with the strong implication of restoring former goodwill; settle; reconcile:

  • They tried to heal the rift between them but were unsuccessful.

√    to free from evil; cleanse; purify:
√   to heal the soul.

As we read various accounts and illustrations in the bible, it is clear that healing does not just deal with the physical body.

Scripture references:

“Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.”  Jeremiah 33:6:

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:27

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.   Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.  Matthew 11:28-30
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Philippians 4:6-8

. . . as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.  Joshua 1:5, 9

The question I have regarding this account is how long was Joshua prostrate with grief before God intervened with words of comfort and compassion?  The reason that I ask this is that we have to know that Joshua’s grief was real and his mourning was expected. Do we not also see through this account that Joshua was fearful?

Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.  Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.  Joshua 1:6-7, 9

In the course of a single conversation, God told Joshua 3 times to have courage.  Why would he tell Joshua to have courage if he already had it?  Because it was his time to lead and Moses, whom he had been with for 40 years; his leader, was gone.  He no longer had His leader-mentor-friend-counselor to lean on.  He had a job; an assignment, to complete and it took the power of God to bring him back to a right state; to heal his emotional state so that he could move on unleashed to complete the will of God in His life.  Clearly his state of fear and dismay was an emotional state that was hindering him from doing the will of God.

In the same manner that God ministered to Joshua, He ministers to you and I; knowing that we cannot operate from a negative emotional state.  We make wrong, bad, consequential decisions that have a lasting result based on a temporary emotional state.  When we can't get past our negative emotional state; when it is to the point of overwhelming us, don't forget that we have a God that we can turn to for solace, comfort and strength in our weakened emotional state.  In our times of sorrow, dismay, grief, hurt and pain, we must remember what God promised in His word:

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.  (Psalm 34:18)

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.  Isaiah 40:29
